Air Jordan 13 x SoleFly

December 29, 2022 | Category: Ward 1 Sneakers

Air Jordan 13 x SoleFly • Celestine Blue

SoleFly is back again, celebrating the beauty of Florida and the joys of yacht life with a fresh AJ13. The original pair propelled MJ to his 6th championship win—but this edition is all about off-court (and on-deck) ease. Big details like the holographic cat’s eye, woven tongue and toe box, and Celestine Blue dimpled upper are grounded in neutral hues for a shoe that’s just as at home on the boat as it is on the streets of South Miami. And with a plush padded collar and two Nike Air units underfoot, you’ll get your sea legs in no time.

Air Max 1 • Ugly Duckling Pack

December 19, 2022 | Category: Ward 1 Sneakers

Air Max 1 • Pecan Ochre & Honey Dew

Meet the leader of the pack. Inspired by French architecture, celebrated in sport and revered by fashion, this was the first shoe in the family to reveal Air to the world. Smooth leather contrasts with airy mesh to update this long-standing icon with visual texture. With a fast-paced look, tried-and-true cushioning and classic wavy mudguard, it’s no wonder these kicks have reigned supreme since 1987.

Momma duck said, “quack, quack, quack”—and a new ugly duckling came running back. Inspired by the coveted Dunk collection, the leader of the pack returns with its own eccentric flair. From colors to materials (wait ’til you feel the pigskin nubuck), the Air Max 1 brings all the rebellious details from the original pack and then some. And that embroidered duck on the heel? It calls, “that’s right, keep on staring.”

Air Max 1 • Ironstone

Meet the leader of the pack. Inspired by French architecture, celebrated in sport and revered by fashion, this was the first shoe in the family to reveal Air to the world. Smooth leather contrasts with airy mesh to update this long-standing icon with visual texture. With a fast-paced look, tried-and-true cushioning and classic wavy mudguard, it’s no wonder these kicks have reigned supreme since 1987.

Following the release of a similarly-toned Air Max 95 iteration earlier this year, Nike now readies its classic Air Max 1 runners in “Ironstone.” The upcoming pairs continue to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the iconic Tinker Hatfield-designed silhouette, arriving in clean white perforated mesh and light “Sail” suede panels.

The definitive “Ironstone” hues are strewn across the side Swooshes, heel embroidery, and upper eyelets while subtle neon hits decorate the insoles and special tongue tab patches which feature the text: “Nike Air consists of a special gas, pressurized inside a durable, flexible, urethane skin. After each step or jump, Nike Air cushioning springs back to its original shape.” Rounding out the look are retro-toned sole units featuring clear Air bubble windows.

Air Jordan 11 • Varsity Red

Let’s cut to the chase—the AJ11 is all-time. MJ won 72 games and a title while wearing ’em. Now, the icon returns in classic Chicago colors: Varsity Red and White. From its slick patent leather mudguard to the frosted outsole, this Tinker Hatfield design brings the off-court allure. And for the final touch? Full-length Air cushioning is the cherry on top (er, bottom).

Air Jordan 5 x DJ Khaled • Crimson Bliss

Who’s the best? Sure, it takes a community, but we’re just gonna say it—with kicks this fresh, it’s gonna be you. As part of DJ Khaled’s “We The Best” collection, this AJ5 takes your game to the next level. The pastel colourway with Leche Blue accents, a luxe quilted liner and original details (check out the lace toggles and spiky midsole) showcase your style. Inspired by MJ to KEEP GOING and never stop, Khaled put his own touch on the classic with the “We The Best” logo on the heel and removed the upper pod for a slimmer fit. And don’t forget to flip the tongue—a hidden message reminds you to push through all the noise.

You already know what the Air Jordan 1 is all about. It’s a staple of sneaker culture. The Air Jordan 1, however, wasn’t destined to be an all-time classic. When it first debuted in 1985, there weren’t grand expectations. Instead, there were critics loudly chirping about Nike’s decision to give Michael Jordan a large sneaker deal before he played a single game and the rookie’s choice to sign with a company that, up to that point, was best known for running shoes. Jordan quickly flipped the narrative on the court by winning Rookie of the Year, averaging 28.2 PPG, 6.5 RPG, and 5.9 APG in 1985 while donning Air Jordan 1s. MJ’s meteoric rise propelled the Air Jordan 1, resulting in nationwide demand and making the sneakers a must-have for hoop heads. The AJ1 “Chicago” was inspired by the high top Air Jordan 1 original colorway, first released in 1985. The shoe harkens back to a time when shoe boxes were often lost in inventory stockrooms, only to be found again years later. Before the advent of sophisticated inventory systems, products were typically tracked with pen and paper. Human error was inevitable and frequently resulted in shoe boxes with mismatched lids. The AJ1 Chicago is a throwback to this era, drawing inspiration from what an original 1985 Air Jordan 1 would look like if found decades later in a dusty stock room.
According to the Jordan design team, the goal of this shoe was to create a “time travel moment,” especially for a new generation of consumers. The process of buying a shoe today is very different from what it was like in the 80s. This sneaker attempts to capture that lost and found feeling, giving consumers a taste of what a box-fresh, vintage AJ1 would have looked like back in the day. The Jordan Brand team responsible for developing the AJ1 Chicago obsessed every detail of the shoe’s design to bring this nostalgic story to life. Jordan designers studied multiple pairs of original AJ1s in varying states of distress to capture the nuances of the shoe’s look, described as having “light to no wear but with materials that sat for years in a box and didn’t withstand the test of time.” In a nod to the “lost and found” nature of the colorway, the updated Chicago comes with a mismatched box lid that speaks to the shoes being misplaced in back rooms and basements. Designers added extra details both inside and outside the box that serve as a shout out to shoe promotions created once upon a time. According to the Jordan design team, every detail should be recognizable to those who grew up back in those days, while giving new sneakerheads a chance to experience what it was like. One such example is the inclusion with every pair of a vintage receipt meant to replicate actual receipts that found their way into the hands of collectors from deadstock shoeboxes. The receipt calls up images of how sneakers used to be acquired in analog fashion before the internet age. Jordan designers took an approach that gave the 2022 Air Jordan 1 Chicago “an edge, a narrative and a connection.” They wanted a look and feel that came with a history tied back to something many consumers may not even be aware of. Ultimately, whether old school or new generation, Jordan Brand wants every consumer to see beauty in the story behind the shoe.
